Building a Restorative School

At Swansea Public School, we are aiming to develop a strong and productive relational school culture, through a restorative approach. Restorative practices will drive and sustain authentic partnerships between committed staff, caring students and connected communities.

Swansea Public School is extremely fortunate to have some excellent partners to support us on our restorative journey. Find out more about them below.

Restorative Practice is a whole school teaching and learning approach that encourages behaviour that is supportive and respectful. It puts the onus on individuals to be truly accountable for their behaviour and to repair any harm caused to others as a result of their actions.

The beginning of Swansea Public School's restorative journey has been guided by the introduction of 2 key practices that have immediately impacted the culture of our school and the conduct of our students:

Circles

Every student at our school experiences interactions with their teachers and peers through Circles. This promotes inclusiveness and provides opportunities for everyone to speak and listen to one another in a safe environment. With teachers and students sitting together, all participants are equal and everyone has an opportunity to be heard.

Affective Language

Our staff have made considerable efforts to interact with students using affective statements. These are used to communicate feelings and putting the focus on how one person or one group can be impacted by the behaviour of others. The focus is on the behaviour, not the person.

As Swansea Public School continues on our restorative journey, we will populate the area below with resources. These resources will provide insight into how Restorative Practice is being implemented in our school, in addition to how you can join us on our restorative journey.
